I quit smoking…

ALMOST 3 months ago.  I think I deserve a present.

Many of you have wondered where I’ve been, the short answer to that is work.  The long answer is regaining my sanity, ditching an ulcer, and trying not to kill anyone in the process.  Oh and throw a sunburn in for good measure and we’re golden.

So in the last few weeks I have scrambled around trying to compile a baseball season (for work) and then insanely decided that I would help coach a girl’s softball team.  I’m not sure what I was thinking, but you know what?  I’m stoked.  Granted, slow pitch isn’t my thing… free softball leagues aren’t my thing… beginners in slow pitch softball… probably not my thing either.  Lucky for me, I have a friend who’s coaching with me and a head coach who knows the girls.  Games start next week and we’ve had one practice (stupid floody-floody).

I’ve also decided that quitting smoking REALLY sucks.  Lots of things suck.. caffeine headaches, sarcastic 14 year olds, finger paints, screaming, washers overflowing, wet hugs, grocery shopping, etc.  But quitting smoking sucks a whole lot more.  I know that there are a bunch of you out there who never smoked and never will and you know what?  Brava.  But for those of us who have/do… it’s different.  That stupid little stick of nicotine is what stopped us from choke-slamming someone in public.  I no longer have my parachute.  I’d like to say it’s gotten easier but I might be lying.  The first month was full of straight determination.  The second month was full of desire.  The third month is full of this nagging feeling.  It’s like having to chase down the ice cream truck.  Now instead of it being a kid with stamina, speed, and agility… picture an overweight woman with asthma and a broken ankle (just for illustrative purposes) chasing the ice cream truck.  We all know damn well she’s not gonna make it, she’ll give up.  I would give up too.  Who needs to chase the ice cream truck when you can just go to the gas station??  Major pitfall of ceasing smoking?  MUNCHIES.  I would eat the carpet if it were crunchy and had a flavor other than dog.  Now, for the record I didn’t quit smoking because it was expensive or because it was a gross habit.  I enjoyed smoking.  I quit smoking because it’s colder than hades in North Dakota and one day I’d like to have children without having to freak out about quitting.  I wanted to quit on my own terms and if that means eating anything that has chocolate AND peanut butter on it, so be it.

Last but not least… I won’t be around for a few days.  As a matter of fact when you read this post, I will be entertaining my mother-in-law who came to visit from out of town while mowing baseball fields, finishing up on a sports season, running another, hosting a family dinner/going away party for a friend, coaching a softball team, and trying to avoid these terrible mosquitoes.  I’m a busy person lately for some weird reason.  It’s also been determined that I need a hobby.  Any suggestions?  I’m handy (not so creative anymore but I can manage), partially crafty, and in it for the money.

  1. Wow you've been so busy! I'm really proud of you for sticking with the no smoking. When I first met Ryan he smoked and I made him quit…almost 4 years ago. Yes, you read that right-MADE him! Sometimes when he has been drinking for a while or we're someplace where there is someone smoking he really wants one–but he also doesn't give in. I know it's a BIG struggle at times, but it's still such a HUGE accomplishment

  2. Would you like me to make you a big cigg shaped cake for you 3 month anni?? Really, I would try! Props to you, I know it's hard. šŸ™‚ I used to smoke and I know the feeling you're going through. I didn't smoke for as long as you did, but enough to know the feeling of never having those cravings go away. Just talking about it right now, makes me want one. But I know the second I inhale I'll be choking to death because of my asthma (yeah nice combo hu?). So that prevents me…and I know it's not healthy and I do enough unhealthy things in life. Keep it up, it's worth it in the long run.
